Bringing Bibliotherapies to the
Romance Community
This is one of my first bookish pictures I took, little did I know where this journey would take me!
Brittni Van, Ph.D.
Let’s set the clocks back to 2020 - I’m a stay-at-home mom and PhD student, and the world shuts down. I’m trying to figure out how to balance school, lecturing, and kids at home 24/7. Yeah, you know how that was… Well, I decided to find some “homeschooling” resources at our local library (sorry, I have to stop here and laugh a bit at myself because homeschooling was a very loose definition of what we did), and happened to stumble upon the romance section. Now, I have been a long-time reader, but had never really gotten far into steamy romance—you know, the good stuff we talk about on the daily now. One thing led to another, and before long, I was consuming a book every other night. That’s not a joke at all! I’m pretty sure Bertha at the library was winded picking out new books for me on the daily.
Fast forward to 2024 - I’m still here, in Romancelandia…not reading as much (actually I take that back, not reading as many “fun read” books as I was) and still loving it. In the past 4 years, I went from mass-consuming anything my little library had, to Amazon book deliveries weekly, to beta/ARC reading for some of my favorite authors. Now, I’m fortunate enough to work with some of my favorite authors and call reading my career!
In case you’re wondering, I did finally graduate with my PhD in Human Development from Iowa State…hence ‘The Romance Doctor’ title I now hold. I love being able to combine my degree with my passion for reading and editing. I believe that my experience in the Human Development field truly allows me to bring a big contribution to the character development and general plotting of storylines.
I now live in Ohio (transplant from my home—Iowa) with my IRL book boyfriend/husband (yes, ladies, they are truly out there). Did I mention he played hockey…and still does (in a men’s league, but I still cheer him on like when we were in college). We have two amazing daughters and two fur babies (Huskies).
Now, tell me a little about yourself!!
